Book Description:

How can children begin to heal after losing a pet? Balloons for Tiger takes an imaginative look at this tough topic as colorful balloons travel from the hands of children to their beloved cat who has passed on. This book lets children open up their hearts and imaginations for a magical journey to the farthest corners of the world, where they’ll meet skydivers, astronauts, superheroes, and everything in between. As they watch the balloons voyage to the other side of the rainbow bridge, they learn to positively process their grief. Balloons for Tiger is a great tool for any child who has experienced the loss of a pet- or any other loved one, too.

How to raise a reader

There is so much joy to be had from a good book. Books spur our imagination, take us to other worlds, make us laugh, cry, and teach us so much about life and the world around us. Plus, reading provides a critical foundation for success in school and in life. Fostering a love of reading early in life is important – here are a few ways to help your child love to read.

Become a reading role model.

Children take cues from their parents. Like so many facets in life, model the behavior you want to see. If you want your child to love reading, let them see you read for fun.  Tell your child about the books you are reading, your favorite books of all time, and what you love about reading.

Read together.

One of the best things a parent can do with their child is to read together, routinely. Even if your child is a baby, read, read, read. If you have an early reader, take turns reading. One fun idea is to choose a book with an upcoming movie adaptation so you can take a special outing to see the book come to life on the big screen.

Visit your local library often.

Statistics show that in 2019, more families visited their local library than movie theaters. Libraries are wonderful resources for communities, providing a fun place to play and learn for children of all ages.

Take a trip to a Little Free Library.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world. Little Free Library sites are popping up everywhere and you’ve probably seen these in your own neighborhood! Don’t forget to donate an old book when you take a new one so your book can find a new loving home.

Gift them books.

Whether it is for a birthday or holiday, suggest that family and friends gift books to your child, and inscribe them with a special note they’ll cherish for years to come.

My Thoughts

When balloons float across the sky they see so much, and Lori Orlinsky describes it in detail.

Overall, this book was a cute book about adventurous balloons, over the sea, and all the way to outer space. The colorful illustrations helped move the store along and gave a beautiful imaginative picture that I thought was very eye-catching. The back matter of questions and coping strategies for parents was also very helpful and I could see myself using several of the suggestions on the author’s list.

I had two problems with the book, however. One, if I hadn’t read the premise, I would have had NO CLUE why we were following these balloons around the world as the story started right as the balloons were being released. Second, while I think the author was going for a rhyming and or lyrical feel to the verbiage, I just couldn’t get it.

In the end, I do think it’s a cute story, but one that really is not clearly defined. However, I know my niece loved all the illustrations and following the balloon’s adventures. She gave it a 3-star rating, and I will give it 3.5 because I liked the questions and coping recommendations in the back.

*I volunteered to read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
