ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Linda Thompson

Linda Thompson stepped back from a corporate career that spanned continents to write what she loves—stories of unstoppable faith. Her debut novel, The Plum Blooms in Winter, was a Cascade Award winner and a Christy- and Carol-Award finalist. Linda writes from the sun-drenched Arizona desert, where she lives with her husband, a third-generation airline pilot who is also her Chief Military Research Officer, one mostly-grown-up kid, and a small platoon of housecats. When Linda isn’t writing you’ll find her rollerblading—yes, that makes her a throwback—taking in a dramatic desert moonrise, or enjoying their first grandbaby.

The hardest part about publishing books and the best thing about publishing books

The best thing is easy—that would be readers! My debut novel, The Plum Blooms in Winter, was my labor of love for seven years. My new release, The Mulberry Leaf Whispers, consumed me for three. So that transition from a list of scenes rattling around my head to a story that takes on life in readers’ minds and hearts is an epic moment.

It’s also very gratifying to have the privilege of giving new breath to old stories about real-world heroes. I like to write from life, because I think it’s even more encouraging when readers know the novels showcase real people with real faith confronting real struggles—and getting real God-engineered outcomes.

There are a lot of hard things. Figuring out how to get your book noticed among the tens of millions of titles on Amazon is a much bigger challenge than I’d anticipated. I’ve learned that, even when your novel gets “book bling” in the form of award stickers, readers don’t find it on their own. It takes a fair bit of entrepreneurial chutzpah to keep coming up with fresh ways to get the word out.

Deadlines are another nemesis that seems to be an integral part of the author gig. I’m not a fast writer. I’m an analytical with a compulsive need to get the details right, so I tend to really auger into the research. Plus I want to look at the issues from multiple perspectives to examine some of the real-world complexities of the history. The expectation that authors will bring out a new novel each year, while simultaneously serving as their own marketing departments, graphic artists, and website admins has just about pulled me under!
