My Thoughts

Happiness… This book is the optima of looking for the bright side of things.

I loved Caitlin Bangsund’s voice from the very start of this story, she combines lyrical voice with whimsical Joy. All the while engaging kids’ interest by having them look for how many times they can spot a certain someone throughout the story! I thought Macey a beautiful character that kids can easily identify with. From her bright caring personality to her spontaneity, she truly was delightful. I loved reading part of her story and I am curious to see where Caitlin Bangsund takes Macey’s story next.

The overall storyline was imaginative and bouncy. I loved the bright bold colors and the use of the whole page to convey Macey’s story. I also thought that her struggles were presented in an easy-to-understand way, without going into too much detail. Plus, I loved the continual theme throughout the book both in words and pictures that we CAN make lemonade out of the lemons we are given in life and that we CAN truly make an impact on the lives of those around us through them no matter our circumstances.

I give this beautiful story 5 out of 5 stars for its engagingly interactive storyline, the themes presented, and most of all for Macey; A delightfully happy girl who makes people smile.

Guest Post from Caitlin Bangsund

What made you write a book about Macey?

My book-dedication reads, “For Macey – The girl I never knew I always needed.” My daughter Macey makes me smile every day and reminds me to never give up hope. I want people to experience her delight and be inspired by her ability to love and accept everyone around her.

I have experienced the real fear of having my daughter fight cancer before her second birthday and almost losing her to a bacterial infection. She lives to demonstrate a story of hope. That is the reason I write about her.

Writing about Macey is also prompted by her wild imagination. It is so fitting in a children’s book to remind kids (and all ages) that our imaginations can take us anywhere we want! Macey has such fun playing with her imaginary friends and it makes our family life so much more entertaining when we watch her ‘interacting’ with them.

It is fun to embrace opportunities to be playful in life. Macey sees to it that we do that every single day.

Macey has been a catalyst for courage, and also a beautiful reminder of my need to be more present. When Macey was first diagnosed with cancer all of the everyday demands were pushed aside. Life became about comforting and caring for her while she fought to survive.

There was beauty in letting go of control and taking things moment-by-moment. Often that was all there was strength for. I “never knew I always needed” to see things differently – to find the opportunity to be still and to learn to find the “glitter in the muck.”

Writing a book about Macey allows me to take what was hard and ugly and remind others that they can get through what is challenging in their lives right now. I want readers to – “Be like Macey. She lives on a pedestal of authenticity and delight. Her best day is today. And her message is to press on – to conquer – and she leaves a trail of magic in her wake.”
