Synopsis:

One of the darkest periods in history…

In a Jewish ghetto, Max Rosen and his sister Zena struggle to live after their father is taken away by the Nazis. With barely enough food to survive, the siblings make a daring escape from Nazi soldiers into the nearby forest.

Max and Zena are brought to a safe camp by Jewish resistance fighters. But soon, bombs are falling all around them. Can Max and Zena survive the fallout of the Nazi invasion?

With art by Álvaro Sarraseca and text adapted by Georgia Ball, Lauren Tarshis’ beloved and acclaimed I Survived series takes on vivid new life in this explosive graphic novel edition. Publishing in simultaneous hardcover and paperback editions, the book also includes nonfiction back matter with historical photos and facts about World War II and the Holocaust.

My Thoughts

What a book!

This story clearly and graphically (see what I did there?) told the truth about a sad part of our World’s History. I loved the combinations of colors, graphics, and characters that helped bring the story of Max and Zena to life right before my eyes. I tend to be a visual learner and this book was very helpful in explaining more of the history behind the Holocaust and the impact that it had on everyone especially Max and Zena by associating pictures with different events that took place. I liked Alvaro Sarraseca and Georgia Ball’s dedication and adaption of the original story by Lauren Tarshis and thought the whole story was very well done. I especially enjoyed the end notes that gave more details and background to World War II and the Holocaust.

I give this story 5 out of 5 stars for the realistic depiction of events, the great story line, and for the great graphic art that will help me remember the story. I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944 is definitely a book I recommend pick up to add to your history book library.
