Where does your mind go when you hear the words 6 feet under? Mine automatically goes to long lush green lawns filled with varying stones marking someone’s last physical presence on earth. While a cool picture, it is not always what you want to be thinking about. So, I had no clue what I was getting into when I picked up Tui Snider’s newest book 6 Feet Under Texas.

I was surprised and delighted to find a veritable fountain of knowledge and history between the pages! Tui Snider invited me on a journey of discovery, in alphabetical order, traveling all over North Central Texas. She described the settings and locations with GPS coordinates, websites, or landmarks to help you find them. Plus, most importantly, she described the people who are 6 feet under.

“I find history more engaging when it focuses on individuals and how they responded to the unique circumstances of their time.”

From the man who killed John F. Kennedy, to one of my favorites in the book the first female postmaster (or postmistress) for Eastland, Tx, Mrs.Marene Johnson-Johnson. She was fascinating. I loved the history that Tui Snider gave about her and the work Marene did. I really want to visit her stamp mural, I mean it’s 6ft x 10ft and has 11,217 stamps as well as being signed by six U.S. Presidents not to mention tons of United Nations Officials! Tui Snider captured my attention from the first person and kept me engaged throughout the book with her sense of humor, her attention to detail, and the fascinating people she laid before me. I know in the book she made mention of there possibly being a second volume in the works and I will definitely be reading it to learn more about the people 6 Feet Under Texas. The only complaint I had was that I wish I could have learned more about the people that Tui Snider piqued my interest about in this book, but I guess that is why they created libraries right?

I definitely recommend this book to any age group, especially if you are new to homeschooling! Make a day trip and visit these places Tui Snider lists and have an interactive history lesson. I loved it and I am looking forward to reading more books from Tui Snider. A definite 5 out of 5 stars in my book 😉.
