Hello Meghann!!

I was wondering… What is one thing in your life that you would say has had the biggest impact on your writing?

I’ve always been blessed to have people in my life who’ve been very supportive of my writing. When I was in the fifth grade, my teacher was actually so impressed with the little “stranded on a desert island” story I wrote that he called my parents with a praise report about it. What a huge encouragement to eleven-year-old me!

Fast forward to college, and I had the pleasure of studying creative writing with Roland Merullo, an award-winning novelist and memoirist whom Kirkus has called a “brave, meditative author [who] has carved a unique niche in American literature.” His thoughtful lessons, insightful feedback and overall support reinforced my desire to become a published novelist.

One of my thesis advisors in college was Claire Messud, whom The Los Angeles Times has dubbed “an absolute master storyteller and bafflingly good writer.” One of her first questions for me during my thesis defense was why all my characters were so attractive. LOL—I was trying to write literary fiction back then, but I think I was already a romance novelist without knowing it!

My parents encouraged me to go to graduate school for creative writing, where I studied under more fantastic authors and made lifelong writer friends. I put my dream of becoming a published novelist on hold for fifteen years to pursue a career as a business writer, and it was my husband who suggested I quit my day job to focus on writing books and taking care of our babies.

Proverbs 18:4 states: “A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.” I’m so grateful that, regarding my writing, I’ve had so many people “speak life” to me!
